 _____________________________________ INTRODUCTION

Jupiter is a level set for the game Phoenix on the TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-85,
and TI-86 calculators.  This version contains 8 levels, and is designed to be
more difficult than the built-in levels (since you face tough enemies near
the beginning, before you have the chance to accumulate lots of weapons).

 _____________________________________ SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 

 * You need a TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-85, or TI-86 calculator
 * Phoenix version 1.0 must be installed on the calculator
 * You need about 600 bytes of additional memory for the level file

Since you did not pay me anything for the right to use this software, there
is no warranty of any kind.  This software has been tested, and at the time
of release the author was not aware of any serious problems with it.
However, there is still a possibility of unforeseen problems.  If you do
encounter any problems with this program, please inform me as soon as
possible (of course, I cannot guarantee that I will fix such problems).

This software is in the public domain, which means that it is not copyrighted
at all.  Thus you may use, copy, or modify it any way you want.

However, I would appreciate if you at least do the following if you are
making a modified version:

 - Don't restrict distribution of it
 - Supply source code
 - Give me a reasonable amount of credit
 - Make your version also public domain, or copyrighted under a license that
   still allows users to distibute modified versions freely 

 _____________________________________ INSTRUCTIONS

To play the level on the TI-83 or TI-83 Plus, simply send the level file to
the calculator, and select "Jupiter!" from the level selector that appears
when you start Phoenix.  You must have Phoenix on the calculator to play the
game.  If you have saved the game, you can resume by simply running Phoenix
again which will restore the saved game (you must still have the level file
on the calculator when you restore the game).

To play the level on the TI-85 or the TI-86, send the level file to the
calculator and then run the level file to start a new game (note that if
there is a game saved currently, that game will simply resume and these
levels will not be used).  To restore a game saved inside these levels,
run the level file again.  You must keep Phoenix on the calculator to be
able to play these levels.  You also must make sure that the Phoenix has
its original name.

 _____________________________________ INFORMATION ON CREATING LEVELS

At the moment, there is no level editor, so you can only create levels by
manually entering the data describing each level.

Please note that the format of the levels is likely to be changed in the
future, which may make any information here obselete for future versions of
the game.  This is one reason why I haven't created a level editor, or
written a more detailed description.

All of the source files needed to generate the Jupiter level have been
included with it.  You can (and probably should) use these as a basis for
any new levels you want to create.  The only assembly source file you need
to edit to create a new level file is 'level.asm'; all of the others only
form the 'headers' for the various calculators, which you should not edit
unless you know what you are doing.  You can examine the current 'level.asm'
file to get an idea of how levels are designed.

The 'level.asm' file begins with an 8-byte identifier of the levels, which
should be unique for every level released.  It must be a full 8 bytes (you
can add spaces to the end if you want a shorter name) as the program expects
data to start after that.  Since it is used to identify the level when
restoring saved games (as well as to display the level list in the Ion
version of the game) it will create confusion if multiple levels have the
same name, and may cause worse problems since a user could save a game in
one version and try to restore it in another.

After that comes the list of levels in the game.  This is simply a list of 
addresses of level data, one after another.  The level file will always be
at a constant location in memory, so you do not need to worry about
relocation here or anywhere else.

The levels themselves are somewhat more complicated.  The level begins with
one byte giving the number of enemies (which should be 0 for "special"
levels like the shop) and then a list of "commands" that are used to set up
the enemies.  You can look in the 'levels.asm' file in the main Phoenix
source code for some comments which describe what each command does, and of
course there are plenty of examples in this level file, and the main
'levels.asm' for Phoenix's original levels.  The format of sprite data
should be pretty obvious by looking at some of the examples.  In the future,
the level set-up commands may be described in more detail in the
'internal.txt' file included with Phoenix.

The actual process of forming a level file from the 'level.asm' data is not
terribly simple in itself, as level files must be generated for four
calculators, some of them containing code in addition to data, and the Usgard
version has one section subject to Usgard's relocation and one that isn't.
Fortunately, this process can be automated fairly simply by the 'build.bat'
file included with these levels.  To build the level (for all 4 calculators)
just type the command "build LevName" at the MS-DOS prompt, and it should
do everything automatically.  Note that you must do this with all of the
header '.asm' files present in the same directory, which also should be a
subdirectory of where you have put the "main" Phoenix archive (so that the
main Phoenix include files can be located).  You also must have the Ion,
Usgard, and Asm86 build tools on your computer and in your current path for
this to work, and put the 'standard' Usgard and Ion include files where they
can be found also.
